October 17 a sad dayYesterday Pepper my hamster died....he had slowed down a lot over the last week or two but was still eating well,so I was sad to find him lying in the cage yesterday afternoon as he was only around 18 months old .At the weekend I changed his bedding for the winter one I used last year in case the change in temperature at night was making him lethargic. On Monday he enjoyed several hours of sunshine in the conservatory and was lively when handled and seemed happy with his warmer bed . Fergus ,seeing the cage was empty, asked where Pepper was, so I told him that he had gone to live with Jesus and that Jesus was looking after him now ..his reply "is he coming back ?"when I said no ,Fergus asked"is he happy ?"... Maybe this is not scriptural to tell him this ..but how could I tell him I had dug a hole in the raised border and buried Pepper in the cold ground !
This reminded me of when one of our cats died years ago and I was minding Timmy ,the youngest son of our vicar ..he asked me where the cat had gone and I told him the same as I had told our sons 'she has died and gone to live with Jesus',when he told his dad he questioned why I would say that ..so I asked him 'what are you going to tell them ?'..which was the last I heard about my explanation :-)
Our little ones need a kind answer when a pet dies ,and I am sure that The God I know will not condemn me for my answers .
*blessings*
May 06 Friday nightWell it's Friday night & Pepper my new hamster is doing well...
I have had to listen to my loving family asking if he is dead yet,and other sarcastic comments.
Not that I am bothered about what they have to say !
Scooby (our elderly tom cat)is very curious & has been sitting on guard waiting for Pepper to appear,as I do not want the cat to make a meal of him I have put the cage into the fireplace recess & have to remember to close the room door when I go out & at bedtime .
Every night I have woken up to the sound of the hamster running on the wheel ,he must run miles & the "rattle rattle rattle" echoes up through the chimney breast & so sounds as if it is in the bedroom what a little ...darling!
At least I know he is still alive !!!
On a more serious note,I have had a look at Cassies dad's blog & photos. Our lovely Cassie has been so brave, because she has already been through this before so knew exactly what was to be done & how she would be feeling now .
Lots of people all over the world are praying for her to be well,so I reckon that with all the time differences Cassie will be getting 24 hour prayer cover, which is reassuring for her & her family & quite awesome when you think about it.
We will rejoice together when Cassie is back home doing her own blog. May 03 Another Hamster!Well I thought it was time I chose another hamster.
After the hamster "saga" after Christmas (see pets category )
I was going to wait a while before I wrote about it !
Then I thought no ,that's not right ,I should think positively take his photo & give him a name ...
so I named him "Pepper"& took a pic.of him last night.
Pepper was the smallest of the ones for sale ,he let me pick him up in the shop & seemed happy to be handled so he was chosen!
I did have a little panic though ,as when I put him in the cage , he went under the excercise wheel & squeaked loudly & appeared to be stuck .
But he was just scared & was trying to find somewhere to hide .
He has settled in ok now ,and all is well ! January 27 cats!As if the hamster saga wasn't enough,we also have a poorly cat!
Well not poorly sick, but Scooby had a bad eye at Christmas and I thought he had been sitting in a draught.
However it looked worse after new year so we took him to the vet.
As he is 17 or 18 years old(the cat not the vet!)he is not keen on being shut in the basket and howled in protest.
The vet diagnosed an ulcer in Scooby's left eye and gave him an injection and some eye drops and said if it did not clear up he would need an operation.(I do look after my pets...honest!)
So I put the drops in 3 times a day went back to the vets after a few days.
Thankfully the eye was much better and he doesn't need the op.but has to have more drops in 'til it is healed.
To get the stuff in his eye I wrap him in a bath towel and lay him on my knee, then give him tuna or chicken as a treat. After a few days of this the clever cat started coming to me to be wrapped up and then on being released ran to his treats dish to see what he was getting! Those people who think cats are stupid should take note !
I think he will miss all the attention when his eye is better,
I hope he doesn't turn into a hypocondriac cat just to get treats!!!!
Scooby (gray stripey one)
Shelley died last year(white one)
Scooby still looks for him & for Pebbles(also died) and misses them as they slept together . hamsters!Hello,I'm back!
Happy new year to everyone too.
I am not having a very happy time just now,
I got a lovely hamster, and new cage and things, for Christmas but the poor thing died 6 days later!
I rang the shop and they said "it has a 7 day guarantee, pop it in the freezer and bring it back for a replacement"
I was shocked at their response as I was gutted that the poor little thing had died.
Anyway,I did as requested and took it back to another branch of pets at home for a replacement.
I really wanted one that looked similar (pale syrian with a few white spots on it's bum)but alas they only had darker ones,so I got a brown one.The young man that sorted it out changed the receipt so that Lucy 2 had a 7 day guarantee.(bit morbid thinks I,but he was non- judgemental!)
The change of colour meant I had to tell the kids that Lucy hamster was no longer with us!
I felt really awful about it,all I had to show that she ever existed was a photo taken the day before she died.(I must say she looked very well )
The first few days with Lucy 2 were spent checking she was alive. After 10 days i stopped worrying so much and started to enjoy my new pet.I even took some photos.
Then ...disaster she died!
Well I was mortified......I was now a killer of 2 hamsters.
We have had hamsters before, when our sons were younger, and never had them die on us like this.
I was convinced that I was to blame for their demise, but at the back of my mind I was suspicious.
As my computer was broken (another sad story!)I asked Gavin to look on google to see if there had been a problem with other hamsters.Well, guess what,an article on their said they had a problem with hamsters dying from "wet-tail".
It did take some of my guilt away, but I now have to tell the kids that Lucy 2 is dead.
Will they think I have killed 2 hamsters and remember this Christmas as"the Christmas auntie Sandra/grandma let 2 hamsters die!"
I hope not,but you never can tell with small children
