    Churches Together in Driffield

This Sunday 'Churches together in Driffield 'said goodbye to two church leaders ...Lieutenant Lynda Melin is leaving us to retire and two new Captains ,husband and wife, will be taking over the leadership of the Salvation Army Corp .in Driffield based at 125 The Mount . Lynda intends to come back to worship with the many friends that she has ,made in Driffield during the years she has been an officer here .We also said goodbye to  Christian Fellowship minister  ,Arthur Wood ,who is moving to the Cheshire area to take up a new post there .All Saints Church was filled with Christians from all the churches in Driffield for the praise service organised by Churches Together leaders ..and what an amazing time of worship we all joined together in .The Holy Spirit moved among us  as we enjoyed the  selection of songs chosen by each Church minister who introduced and explained their reasons for choosing the song/hymn .I am sure that our singing would be heard by people passing by as we 'raised the roof'with our music and songs .How good it is for us  to meet  with our brothers and sisters in Christ and share such a time of praise ,prayer and worship together  ..a foretaste of Heaven !

(I hope to post the song titles...soon )

sorry for being so lazy and not updating my space  regularly.I would like to  thank  those of you who leave comments for me even when I do not update my blog ,you are a great encouragement to me  :-)

'Moses,I know you're the man 'the Lord said

This Sunday was our united morning service for 'Churches together in Driffield' at the Methodist church .One of the hymns has stayed on my mind ,especially the chorus .I couldn't find it online so had to copy it from my hymn book ..if anyone can tell me  where to find the music online I would be really pleased to know :-)
     'Moses,I know you're the man'
    the Lord said.
'You're going to work out my plan'
    the Lord said.
'Lead all the Israelites out of slavery,
and I will make them a wandering race
called the people of God '

                                                  (chorus)
    So ev'ry day
    we're on our way,
for we're a travelling, wandering race
called the people of God .
    ......

'Don't get too set in your ways',
    the Lord said
'Each step is only a phase '
    the Lord said.
'I'll go before you and I shall be a sign
to guide my travelling wandering race .
You're the people of God '

     chorus
    So ev'ry day...
    .....
'No matter what you may do '
    the Lord said
'I shall be faithful  and true '
    the Lord said
'My love will strengthen you as you go along,
for you're my travelling wandering race .
    You're the people of God'
     chorus
    So ev'ry day...
    ....
'Look at the birds in the air '
     the Lord said
    'They fly unhampered by care'
    the Lord said
'You will move easier if you're travelling light
for you're a wandering  vagabond race.
You're the people of God '.

    chorus
    So ev'ry day...
    .......
'Foxes have places to go '
    the Lord said ,
'but I've no home here below'
    the Lord said.
'So if you want to be with me all your days ,
keep up the moving and travelling on .
You're the people of God .'

    4th Sunday in Advent

today we have 4 candles burning on the Advent wreath ,today's prayer is for Mary, mother of our Lord. "Loving God we thank you for Mary who experienced the purest joy at the birth of her son,and the deepest pain at His death. We pray today for expectant mothers that they may feel joy at the new life growing within them;for new parents that they may accept the responsibility to love and nurture their children;for parents who have been bereaved, comfort them in their grief. Please give us faith. like Mary,to acknowledge and accept Your will for our lives ,and the reassurance that You will give us to strength to overcome the difficulties. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit so that we may reach out in love to each other . Amen  "

    ==================================================

25th december :- all 5 candles are now alight on the Advent wreath the centre candle is for JESUS !

    Christmas Morning Advent Wreath Prayer

Lord,You come as a tiny fragile baby;yet we know that You are God and you are with us. May the flame of this candle remind us that You are the light of the world and that if we follow You ,we will never walk in darkness , but will have the true light of life . Amen

Christmas day 2006 is nearly over here in England ,we have had a lovely family Christmas blessed with good health ,a warm  home  and plenty to eat ....praise God for providing us with more than we need .

All best wishes for 2007  ,that it will be a year of plenty for those who are not so fortunate .

    Third Sunday in Advent

We now have three candles  burning on the  Advent wreath ,the prayer for this week

"Powerful God ,thank you for John the Baptist, who lived a life of austerity and contemplation in preparation for the coming of The Messiah;waiting for the moment when You would reveal; the true identity of His relation. Please give us patience, like John,to be ready to acknowledge You at the right time.Grant us the humility to allow our words and actions to point to the way to You,not to use them for our own self-gratification and glory.Empower us by Your Holy Spirit to have the courage to uphold the principles of our faith, even if to do so means facing hardship or ridicule .Amen "

Bishop Richard was with us for the morning communion service as, sadly,Mike was still away after attending his dad's funeral.
The evening carol service was well attended  with the Southwold singers leading the worship and the chidren surprised us with a presentation of 'Christ's birth' with a 'modern slant 'with talking animals !

I took the photos in Church after the evening service .

    Advent Hymns

During the season of Advent, Christians across the world prepare for the celebration of the arrival of the Lord into the world through the birth of his Son Jesus Christ. Advent is a time to celebrate light in the midst of darkness. It is also a time to look forward to when Jesus will come a second time.

Yesterday was the second Sunday in Advent and the second candle on the wreath  was lit in our morning service to this prayer :-

    "God of guidance thank you for the lives of the ancient prophets;
    for their example of courage in giving unpopular messages to the people;
for the beauty of the language of those whose words foretold the coming of the Messiah .
Thank you for the lives of people in our time who,by their words and actions, give us messages from You.Please give us unsight to discern true prophecy and listen to it.
Strengthen us by Your Holy Spirit to act on the messages of truth and speak out for You .
we pray for these things in the name of the greatest prophet of all,
    Christ the true Word." Amen

There are some wonderful songs and hymns for the Advent weeks ,this one written around 1744 by Charles Wesley is one of my favourites (listen to tune by clicking on url )

    Come, thou long-expected Jesus,
    born to set thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us,
let us find our rest in thee.
    Israel's strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art:
    dear desire of every nation,
    joy of every longing heart.

    Born thy people to deliver,
born a child, and yet a king,
born to reign in us for ever,
    now thy gracious kingdom bring.
    By thine own eternal Spirit
    rule in all our hearts alone;
    by thine all-sufficient merit
raise us to thy glorious throne.

'The Desired of all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory',
    says the Lord Almighty....Haggai 2 v 7

David's Licensing service ..Church Of England

Friends of ours ,David and Lesley Phillips, moved to Elloughton earlier this month for David to begin working in his paid job as assistant curate in the parishes of Elloughton,Brough and Brantingham .They are living in a clergy house in Elloughton ,not far from the church. More than 50 people from Driffield went by coach to be with David for his licensing service ...Bishop Richard took the service  of hymns and prayers ..during which  items that represented our faith were assembled ,by representatives of the parishes, on a table in the centre of the Church ...after each item was placed Bishop Richard asked ..."David will you answer this call "
to which David replied "With the help of God I will "

    the items ...

A Bible..."God calls us as His people to proclaim His word in every season and circumstance that the people in our generation may know that Jesus Christ comes with power to free us from every evil and sin, from every fearin life and death "
A jug of water..."We are called to bring all people to a knowledge of the truth. We are to teach by word and example His way of love ,forgiveness and service leading people to commit themselves to Jesus and to express that commitment through baptism. In so doing we are to welcome them as fellow members of the body of Christ."
A chalice ...Jesus is known among us in the breaking of bread. In faith He makes us one with Him,He takes what we are and renews us with His life.As the bread is broken and the wine poured out we learn to lose our lives ,so that we may take them up again ,remade ever more in His image "
A knot of rope ...Jesus calls us to be devoted to one another and to serve one another in love.We are members of the same heavenly family.children of the same Heavenly father. unity is Christ's desire and prayer and our greatest witness to the world of God's love in Jesus "

after making the promises that he would adhere to the rules of the church of England for services etc. and signing to that effect ,David was handed  his  licence  by the Bishop with the words
..."Receive this licence as a sign of the ministry, which is both mine and yours;in the name of the Father, and of the Son,and of the Holy Spirit. The Lord give you courage, wisdom, strength and love to do His will and fulfil this ministry;and the blessing of God Almighty the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be upon you and uponall your work ...Amen
David,I commend to you the people of these parishes. Will you serve themas their minister of God ?"
    David answered ..."With God's help,I will .
then the Bishop "Christian people of these parishes ,I commend to you your new assistant curate. Will you continue to pray for him and for each other.that together you may be good stewards of the gifts of God,equpped for the work of ministry?"
the reply ..."By the help of God, we will ."
This was a moving moment for us  from Driffield as some ,like myself ,have known David & Lesley for  more than 30 years and have prayed for this day for a long time :-)

Afterwards we all enjoyed supper in the church hall and met some of the people who have already made our friends so welcome .

    Updating at last !

Well.I thought I was never going to be able to post anything ever again ...I have tried several times since Thursday and not been able to get 'the thing 'to work ! I had a great birthday ..thanks, and our 38th wedding anniversary was celebrated on the same day.We got engaged on my 17th birthday and  married on my 18th :-) I got lots of cards  and e-cards and flowers and celebrated by going out to a local restaurant for a very enjoyable evening meal  and then back to our house for coffee and icecream. Also among the presents was a ticket for diggerland ..where I can drive the diggers etc ..for those of you, like Gail , who wonder what diggers are ......
       http://www.diggerland.com/     shows you ...lol
    ................................................................................................................

This morning's service was the 'all age service' but with it being half term school break there were not as many young people as usual ...also the 'team' who lead the service ..including the organist and Mike our vicar...were also missing :-)  The rest of us did manage to worship ,with the leadership of our three Davids.....Rev David ,lay reader David and pianist David (all 3  really are all named David )....so all is well at All Saints ! The word for me this morning was that we are 'called and chosen' ...it is God that does the choosing and calling ..amazing to think that The  Creator of the universe chooses and calls us ..Accepting His call to me in 1979 was the beginning of a whole new life for me and now I cannot imagine a life without Jesus  :-)

"You are a people of God; He loved you and chose you for His own.So then you must clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility.gentleness, and patience ."
    Colossians 3 v 12

God is still working on me ,so when 'I get it wrong 'it is me not listening to Him .....patience is a hard one for me .especially with myself :-)
    ............................................................................

some birthday pics .........also some online 'gifts ' ..trust you can tell which are which :-)

not sure how the flying dove got in there ...it looks good though so it can stay !

    The Human nature of Jesus

It is a while since I posted about our house  group bible study ...we are meeting every other week just now and studying The letter to The Hebrews .The Sunday sermons are linked to the study which means the whole church fellowship are reading and studying the same passages, either in a house group or on their own with the help of the study sheet provided .
quote from notice sheet ... "the writer looks at the idea of God with a Human Face ,emphasising the human nature of Jesus-an encouragement to the hearers of letter who were struggling. The writer reminds them that ,through Jesus suffering,He opened the way for us to inherit eternal life ."
Our church has lending library with a good selection of books ,one I am reading just now by Philip Yancey 'The Jesus I never knew ' is a good one to be reading along with the study as it focuses on the human and the divine aspects of Jesus side by side and  promises to be a very good read !
a quote from the book cover
"The Jesus I never Knew uncovers a Jesus who is brilliant, creative, challenging, fearless, compassionate, unpredictable, and ultimately satisfying. This honest book will help you discover a different Jesus from the flannelgraph Sunday school figure, the sweetly smiling Victorian Savior, and all the cultural cliches that have tamed Jesus and kept Him in comfortable religious boxes .....No one who meets Jesus ever stays the same"and Yancey says of himself  ....."Jesus has rocked my own preconceptions and has made me ask hard questions about why those of us who bear His name don't do a better job of following Him ".....
I have read 2 chapters and am 'hooked '!
    .............................................................................................................................................................................................
It is a year this week since I started posting on here , during the year I have had so many kind and encouraging comments from so many lovely people .....a big  'THANKYOU' to all of you  :-)

    All- age service

    From the notice sheet
    Theme for today's all-age service

    readings :Ephesians 2 1-22 & Mark 6 30-34 ; 53-56

Paul tells us in this passage from Ephesians that we were once all lost in sin,and through grace we have been brought back to God. So now there is nothing to differentiate us from anyone else who has been saved .That means that we all have a place and a part to play in the Church regardless of age or gender.
    .............
Mike ,our vicar, illustrates  a part of the sermon at this service  with the assistance of our children who are always keen to help !
We had no idea that the scripture from Ephesians was about fruit salad ...
a bowl of prepared fruit salad was passed around the younger ones & they described the colour ,smell ,texture shape etc of the contents ...we were then told that we the church members should like the salad a good mix of differences that made up the whole ..all adding our bit to make a good fragrant mixture but that sometimes the more dominant came along and tried to make everyone the same as them ... next the whole lot was liquidised ,then inspected and  commented on by the children who decided that the fruit salad looked and smelled better than the jug of stuff that smelled 'not very nice' and ' of nothing in particular' but to look at resembled 'sick' ...you can always depend on kids to say it as it is ...lol

so the conclusion was that we do not want or expect everyone to be the same ,we are all different but acceptable just as we are !
    v 21-22 ( living bible )
"We who believe are carefully joined together with Christ as parts of a beautiful constantly growing temple for God .And you also are joined with Him and each other by the Spirit, and are part of this dwelling place of God "
so you see we are a lovely bowl of fresh fruit salad !
(the original sermon was of course much better than my post ! )
    ..........
one of the hymns we sang :-

For I'm building a people of power
and I'm making a people of praise
that will move through this land by My Spirit
and will glorify My precious name ...

    Build Your church Lord
    make us strong Lord
    join our hearts Lord
    through Your Son,
make us one Lord in Your body
in the kingdom of Your Son.
    .........

'God of our pilgrimage .You have led us to the living water: refresh and sustain us as we go forward on our journey,in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord ...amen'
we then sang this blessing to one another  ...

"May God's blessing surround you each day,as you trust Him and walk in His way may His presence within guard and keep you from sin ...go in peace,go in joy, go in love."

while singing this everyone looks around the church and blesses each other...you can really feel the presence of the Holy Spirit whilst doing this very simple act of shared worship :-)

    ............
After the service the house groups enjoyed a faith lunch ...and discussed
our last bible study and what as a church we were going to do with what God had revealed to us ...The findings were encouraging as each group had brought very similar sentences as to what we should be doing as the body of Christ here in Driffield .our group decided on ..
'We are created to Worship care and share ,love God ,love each other and show that love to others in our community '

all the results are going to be put into 'Our mission statement' for All Saints and St Mary's.

    Todays meetings

Well it's time I posted something in this here space  :-)
So far I have had 19 comments left on an empty blog, nice people out there and very trusting too as you have no idea what you are commenting on yet !
It's so long since Sunday and so hot here that I am going to struggle to string a post together at all ...

    from the notice sheet
    Morning Worship & family communion
    readings Ephesians 1.3-14 & Mark 6.14-29
Today we begin a 'mini series'looking at the nature of the church through Paul's letter to the Ephesians. This opening chapter is almost breathless ! It is a hymn of praise through which we discover that we are blessed ,redeemed and forgiven and that our primary purpose is to bring glory to God
    Evening ...Informal worship
    readings Romans 15.14-end
Through the eyes of Paul we look at the nature of Christian leadership and discover that it has five 'Ps' ! ...Priestly, Powerful,Pioneering, Personal and Prayer-dependent...
all these five are in the reading .

This is relevent to us as a church as earlier this month David was ordained .Also it is not meant just for the leaders ...we all have a part to play and each one has a contribution towards fellowship of the church ,The body Of Christ here in Driffield.

Next week the house groups are meeting together over a shared lunch to 'sum up' the findings from the bible studies shared by All Saints Driffield & St. Mary's Little Driffield .....
"What is our reason for being & what in practical terms does that mean ?"
questions covered and studied from bible references included ...
why does the church exist...what is God's will and plan or intention for the church ?
what are we to be as the church...who & what are we ?
what are we to do as the church..what does God want done in the world ?
how are we to do it ...what are our instructions, methods etc ?
so we are supposed to formulate our answer from what we have learned
during the studies ...try summing up five weeks meetings in one sentence !
mine is going to be a long sentence :-)

    David's Ordination

    The Ordination to the Priesthood
     Of Rev.David Phillips

    All Saints,Driffield
    Sunday July 2nd 2006

This Sunday evening a friend of ours
was ordained into the Church of England.
The church building was packed with people
who wanted to share this special day
with David and his wife Lesley.
During the last year Dave has been working
as a Deacon in the parishes of Driffield & Little Driffield
doing everything he has waited so long to do !
For now we are pleased that he will remain in our parishes as curate ...until another post becomes open for him..
Selfishly ....I  hope it will not be yet !The hymns & readings for the service were chosen by David,

the 1st verse of the opening hymn....

'And can it be that I should gain
an interest in the Saviours blood?
died he for me ,who caused his pain?
For me,who him to death pursued?
Amazing love ! How can it be
That thou my God shouldst die for me'

then David was presented by Mike, our vicar,
to the Bishop of Hull to be ordained .
The sermon given by our vicar was The Gospel ,(requested by David ,rather than talking about him & his ordination )
Then  David read John 3 v 1-21..the story of Nicodemus,
where Jesus speaks  about being born again.
This was the reading that brought about David's own conversion (around 1979 I think ,best check on that )At one point David had to kneel in silence and then we sang...

'Spirit of the living God,fall afresh on me
Spirit of the living God,fall afresh on me
break me,melt me,mould me ,fill me
Spirit of the living God,fall afresh on me'
To hear so many voices join it that simple  prayer chorus was amazing !

The whole of the service was very meaningful & moving ,
after the ordination the whole congregation took Holy Communion together, and David assisted as a vicar for the first time :-)
it really was a joyous occasion for us all !
as was the shared supper afterwards where we had a chance to 'catch up' with two of our former parish vicars & their wives,Rev Mark Simons &Frances &  Rev  Richard Carlill &Val .

    Our Church Family

What a lovely weekend we have had
    as a church family,yesterday we had a
strawberry tea party at the vicarage
which was very well attended &
lots of lovely strawberries & cream
were consumed in the afternoon sunshine.
    Then today the morning service
was lead by the children ...
who acted out Mark 3 ,35-41
    'The calming of the storm'...
after making a boat out of kneeler cushions
     & putting on waterproof clothing
I really thought there was going to be water !

"The Gospel whilst at first hand
a narrative about a real storm,
is also an engagement with the issue
    of survival as a Christian
in a demanding and pressurised world "
    (taken from notice sheet )

The children also took part in the
    prayer time.
Afterwards we shared a faith lunch ,
which was also enjoyed by all :-)

The evening meeting was a Holy Communion
    healing ministry service with prayers,
    singing & anointing with oil
for those who request extra prayer
for healing of mind body & spirit.
    This,for me,is always a very prayerful time
with a real feeling of the power of
The Holy Spirit among us .
    ..................................................................
    Thursday 29th June
I just want to say something about a new link
(well new to me!) that I have just added to my 'inspiration & meditation list...this blog about church family seemed an appropriate place to put it ,as In God's eyes we are all His family. As I am not that good at getting things to 'travel'to or from my space by my own means :-) I thought I would just put the web address here
instead of trying to copy it all !
I have been visiting three of the family members on msn spaces...but only yesterday did I click on the link for their singing ministry website .I am sure that when you read about them & listen to their singing you will see why I wanted to share this with you :-)

    Happy Birthday .....Pentecost

    Happy birthday !

(from our church news sheet 4th June 2006 )
"Today we celebrate the "birthday"of the Christian Church.

God did something remarkable He sent His Holy Spirit on ordinary people who were not the high and mighty in any religious organisation, giving them extraordinary gifts .
This was God's plan for the salvation of the world-
that the message of salvation would be taken around the globe by ordinary people telling their story and using their gifts .
May He pour out His Spirit afresh on us !

Tonight ,having seen the false claims in D. B.'s Da Vinci code ,we look at what The Bible tells us about the faith and witness of Mary Magdalene .
At last the truth from the best source there is ! "

"Seven weeks had gone by since Jesus' death and resurrection and the Day of Pentecost had now arrived. As the believers met together that day ,suddenly there was a sound like the roaring of a mighty windstorm in the skies above them and it filled the house where they were meeting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on their heads. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in languages they didn't know, for the Holy Spirit gave them this ability."
     .................
The gifts of The Spirit still exist today ,the laying on of hands for healing (& or anointing with consecrated oil )is a ministry used in our church & many others .Also the gifts of prophecy, knowledge & tongues( as well as others) are very much still in use by many Christians.
1n the 1st letter to the Corinthians chapters 12 & 13 ,Paul writes to the church in Corinth explaining spiritual gifts & that without love these  gifts will be worthless,
also that no one gift is more important than another but all are needed for the church ,which is the body of Christ,to function as it should.
All this is as true for today's churches as it was for the church in Corinth.

    Sunday Evening

Sunday evening at All Saints church Driffield...

So many extra people came to the meeting ,so the subject has got people stirred up in Driffield !

    quote.. Rev.Mike Smith

"Tonight we look at some of the claims made by Dan Brown in the Da Vinci Code to see whether the churches claims about the Bible ,Mary Magdalene and even Jesus are actually true "
Hear the truth of the gospel

The meeting started with a brief "plot of the book"
explanation from Mike for those who had not read the book.
Then claimed "facts" were looked at & proved to be"fiction"
by looking at the gnostic gospels referred to in the book,& at reliable history from the first century & also bible passages .
    The first song was ..
Jesus lives to set us free,
    walk,walk in the light.
He binds us all in unity,
    walk, walk in the light.
    etc
and the service of  song & praise was a good setting for the subject !
    the conclusion....
the book in question is ...just a good read ,
The Bible is ... The gateway to eternity

It just shows how our God can use such fiction as a tool to preaching The Gospel of a Living Saviour !

     John 6 v 44
No man can come to me,except The Father which has sent me draw him:and I will raise him up at the last day."

    fact or fiction ....?

    fascinating but still fiction !

    Dan Brown's other  3 books ...
are also good fiction  reads !

    Great but not the Gospel

Whilst reading "Google news" yesterday morning I was surprised to see a link to our local newspaper concerning an article about Da Vinci code book/film which includes a comment from our vicar !
    quote

Great but not gospel - Vicar on Da Vinci code
THE Hollywood blockbuster film the Da Vinci Code - which re-visits claims that Jesus was a father - is to be discussed during a special meeting in Driffield.
All Saints' Church is hosting a special event on Sunday May 21 at 6.30 pm to examine the claims in Dan Brown's book, which has been turned into a film starring Tom Hanks. The film has its premier in Britain this week.

The imminent release of the film, also starring Audrey Tatou, has caused renewed interest in Brown's highly successful book.

The Vicar of Driffield, the Rev Mike Smith, said: "Dan Brown's writing appears to cast doubt on some of the central themes of the Christian faith and questions the honesty of the church over the last 2,000 years.

"I read the book on holiday last year, and couldn't put it down. It is a great read. "However, many people have accepted it as gospel truth when, in fact, it is complete fiction.
"The main claims made by Dan Brown are not based on either historical or theological fact.
He added: "But, this book has achieved something positive.
"It has raised interest in spiritual matters and, in particular, the nature of who Jesus really was.
"On Sunday we shall be looking at the claims in the book, helping people discover the reality and pointing to the real truth about Jesus Christ."

If you are interested in what the book says and where the truth lies, come along to All Saints' Church on Sunday night at 6.30 pm.

A second event on Sunday June 4 th at 6.30 pm will look at the place of Mary Magdalene in the life of Jesus.

What a good advert for our evening meeting & I will let you know the outcome !
I read all three Dan Brown books when they came out in paperback, they are well written fictional stories.
The effect Da Vinci code book had on me was to make me look up scripture to prove the story was fiction !

    I am a new creation

This song has been "in my head " all week...
so I just had to find it & share it

    I AM A NEW CREATION,
    No more in condemnation,
Here in the grace of God I stand.
    My heart is overflowing,
My love just keeps on growing,
Here in the grace of God I stand.

And I will praise You Lord,
Yes, I will praise You Lord,
And I will sing of all that You have done.

A joy that knows no limit,
    A lightness in my spirit,
Here in the grace of God I stand.

We really are "new creations "when we accept what God did for us in letting His only Son Jesus die for our sins.

& using the quote from Good Friday service ....

"It was Love not nails that kept Christ on the cross"

    Easter Sunday

    Christ is risen,Alleluia !
A prayer from our family communion service...
"we pray that the joy of the Resurrection may be known throughout the world, that those who are ignorant of the love of Christ may feel His presence and share His risen life....
May all human endeavour become part of the new creation and life without end"
He is risen indeed ,Alleluia !

during the service our young people enjoyed  making a colourful  Easter banner, which they held up for all to see.

    Happy Easter day !

This evening we ended our Easter celebrations with an informal
time of worship and meditation .
                ................................................
I hope you have all enjoyed your own Easter celebrations .
we all have different ways of celebrating ,and it would be a boring world if we were all alike!
            ......................................................
How do you say...? The origins of the names for the Easter holiday vary slightly. "Easter" and "Ostern" derive from Eostre. Other names are derivative from the Jewish word for Passover, pesach.
    • English: Easter
    • German: Ostern
    • Greek: Pascha
    • Spanish: Pascua
    • Italian: Pasqua
    • French: Pâques
    • Portugese: Páscoa
    • Dutch: Pasen
    • Danish:Paask

    Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week, and the sunday before Easter Day.
The palm represents the palm leaves that were put in the road to welcome Jesus as he rode a donkey into Jerusalem.

T oday we celebrated palm Sunday at our church by distributing palm crosses to all the congregation as they entered the church building. The crosses were waved during the singing of the hymn.."Make way make way for Christ the King"and the children waved coloured flags around to add to the welcoming of Jesus into our lives as represented by His entry into Jerusalem.
The orchestra of adults and children lead the singing
(words of hymn are by Graham Kendrick)

Make way, make way for Christ the King
    In splendour arrives
Fling wide the gates and welcome Him
    Into your lives.

    Make way , Make way

     For the King of Kings
     For the King of Kings
    Make way  make way
    And let the Kingdom in.

He comes the broken hearts to heal
    The prisoners to free
The deaf shall hear, the lame shall dance
    The blind shall see.

    CHORUS

And those who mourn with heavy hearts
    Who weep and sigh
With laughter, joy and royal crown
    He'll beautify.

    CHORUS

The children  are encouraged to take part  and always enjoy the flag waving  !!

    March 27

Mothering Sunday 26th March (this year)

The correct name for Mothers day in the UK is
     Mothering Sunday.
Mothering Sunday is always the fourth Sunday of Lent, but the actual date it is celebrated varies depending on the date for Easter.
In Victorian times it was the day when daughters who had gone into service as domestic servants were given a day off to go home to visit their mothers.
An elderly lady I used to visit, until her death, said for some it was one of the rare times they got a full day off,she was in service as a young girl on a local farm and was fortunate that she was close enough to home to visit with her family on her half days off.
Also she was blessed with an employer who allowed the visits !
In the early to mid. 1900's (in my friends younger days)it was not unusual for some young girls and boys to leave home as young as 10 years old to work away from home and family as servants and apprentices for a year at a time, and to take Mothering Sunday as their one day off to go home, sometimes with presents from kind employers to give to their mothers.

In olden times it was considered important for people to return to their home or"mother"church as most sundays they would worship in the nearest or "daughter "church.
This ties in with the yearly visit home to mother and family

So the history of what we now call Mothers day in England, and now use as a day to thank mothers for all they do for us by giving cards and presents, started out as a very important day for young people...
Thankfully this exploitation of children no longer happens in the UK,and our young have a good education until well into their teens or older.
     ............................................................................................................................................
We should however remember the unfortunate young children  in some parts of the world that are still being exploited by the greedy to work for little or no reward
