    Easter Monday

I am not sure about how people celebrate Easter Monday now in this area ,but when my sons were children we hard boiled eggs  & decorated them and then they took them out to the local park to roll them down the hill, the game was to keep your own egg intact to be the winner.
This was a tradition from my own childhood when all the kids from our council estate gathered with decorated eggs in a field behind the houses and played rolling & racing games with our eggs & ate them when they broke.
As I am from a large family this involved a lot of egg boiling at our house!
I remember mam putting colouring into the water to tint the eggs, sometimes tea leaves. Then we would draw faces on them.
Extras had to be boiled ,as the little ones sometimes dropped their egg before they got to the garden gate
The " rolling "was to symbolise the rolling away of the stone at Jesus' tomb & the eggs were a symbol of new life .

    Easter Eve

Service of Light & Renewal of Baptism Vows
    for Easter Eve 2006.

At 9.30pm this evening we gathered together in church ,which now has had the banners and decorative cloths put back in place. and the  Easter lilies  beautifully arranged in memory of loved ones who have died .
Each person was given a small candle.
The service began when the lights of the church were extinguished and the ministers made their way to the porch carrying the unlit Paschal candle, then the service began with prayers .....including
"By His holy and glorious wounds may Christ our Lord guard us and keep us"
Then the Paschal candle was lit to  these words..
"May the light of Christ, rising in glory, banish all darkness from our hearts and minds"
the candle was raised up with the words
"The Light of Christ"the congregation  replied "Thanks be to God "and followed the ministers  to the Lords table where all the other candles were lit( to signify the turning from darkness into the Light) prayers  ,including these words were said..
"This is the night when Jesus Christ vanquished hell and rose triumphant from the grave .This is the night when all who believe in Him are freed from sin and restored to grace and holiness. Most blessed of all nights when wickedness is put to flight and sin is washed away ...etc "
This was followed by the renewal of baptism vows with readings  and prayers .Then we shared  our first communion of Easter.

    Good Friday

We had a lovely sunny morning for our "churches together"
march of witness through the town centre. The streets were busy with shoppers so it took some time for us all to get to the market square to begin our worship service.
Some people carried banners and  crosses ,we gathered around the market clock and sang and witnessed our Christian faith as people passed by.There are traffic lights next to the square ,so we also had lorries and cars passing by ...

Between 2pm and 3pm our church was open for a time of meditation and Easter readings. The following is a quote from the service...
"It was love, not nails, that kept Christ on the cross"

The day of celebration ended this evening with "churches together in Driffield" meeting in the town hall. The readings and meditations were shared between the various churches.
The closing hymn was "When I survey the wondrous cross".
